How can I find resources on the police and the third republic in France on OhioLINK?

Date: 5/24/10 Time: 1:30

Question: How can I find resources on the police and the third republic in France on OhioLINK?

Answer given to question: After much messing around, we found the subject headings by typing in "police France" although there were not many materials. Next we looked in FRANCIS which led us to Worldcat were we found the most sources. The professor said at grad school he had used a paper index which covered all things French and said he would try to find the name of it. His topic was specifically antimilitarism during the Third Republic in France. Mentioned he had not done research in a while.

Problem accessing NetLibrary book off campus

Date: 05/17/2010 Time:

Question: Problem accessing NetLibrary book off campus

Answer given to question: This happens from time to time and the best way work around is to have the patron go to the "BOOKS" link on the front page left of the library homepage.

Scroll down to NetLibrary and then click on "off-campus access".

Remind the patron they must be a current student or faculty/staff member and must type in their first and last name and all 11 digits on their university ID.

Then ask the patron to type in the title and there should not be a problem with acess at this point.

Can you help me find a book on Warren MacKenzie? I've never really used the library before.

Date: 5/12/10 Time: 7:20

Question: Can you help me find a book on Warren MacKenzie? I've never really used the library before.

Answer given to question: We tried looking up the name, but we both had the wrong spelling. After googling, we found his name and the item her teacher had suggested. I took her up to the stacks and on the way, pointed out different areas of the library so she'd have a better feel for it.

Where can I find education statistics?

Date: 5/6/10 Time: 6:50PM

Question: Where can I find education statistics?

Answer given to question: After some questioning, I learned the student was looking for statistics that compared higher education in the United States to higher education in other countries. He was writing a paper for English. He did not have specific countries he was interested in, just wanted to show that the United States is falling behind. We tried the World Data Analyst first, comparing the United States to China and the United Kingdom, although there was a higher education category, no stats came up. There were some for secondary education. Next, we tried Lexis-Nexis Statistical, there we found education stats the United States. The student thought he would look further at that site.
Note to librarians: A stats guide would be great for LibGuides as there are many great free sites for stats on the Web.

The patron handed me a multimedia/course reserve request form that he had filled out. I checked the number in the DVD area, but it wasn't there, so I asked if it was a book and he said yes.

Date: 05/05/10 Time: 6:45

Question: The patron handed me a multimedia/course reserve request form that he had filled out. I checked the number in the DVD area, but it wasn't there, so I asked if it was a book and he said yes.

Answer given to question: First, I asked if he had been to the 3rd floor before to look for a book and he said yes. (He is a foreign student and I know he overheard me telling a couple of students to fill out the form to check out DVDs, so I think he got confused.) Then I said we should probably check the item's status in the catalog before venturing upstairs. It turned out that all of the copies were checked out. What he was requesting was "All quiet on the Western Front," and he just wanted to reread the book before his final. We requested it through OhioLINK, but in case it doesn't come in by the time he needs it, I found him a copy of the book online. Google Books didn't have it, but I googled the title + "online books" and found it on Questia. Only after he left did I realize the site was going to make him pay after a limited trial. Because of this, I'm frustrated with myself because I thought I'd found him a solution.

Answer given to question: Not sure what the full name was, but after talking with the student, he was apparently looking for materials to study for a biology exam that he must take to graduate in his major. we found some GRE Biology books on reserve which he said would work for his purposes.

For the librarians, do any other majors have these types of exams?

How can I find educational articles on Al Qaeda on the library's website?

Date: 5/3/10 Time: 1:30

Question: How can I find educational articles on Al Qaeda on the library's website?

Answer given to question: First, I clarified what the student meant by educational which was anything not on the Internet. I showed her Academic Search Complete and then showed her where to find further articles via the databases under the Political Science links. I also suggested she look at the library catalog to find some general books about Al Qaeda to perhaps narrow her topic - - pick specific leaders, or areas of the world where Al Qaeda was working out of.
