Two students from my class last week, looking for their popular and scholarly articles.

Answer given to question: First student had trouble finding her scholarly article. She needed to adjust her search terms - expanded tanning by looking at subject terms of other articles. Combined tanning and cancer and switched her from Health Source:Consumer Edition to HealthSource : Academic Nursing Edition.

Second student had started in a subject specific subject database and could not find a popular article. I directed her towards Masterfile Premier.

I am looking for biographies on Albert Schweitzer.

Answer given to question: We looked on POLAR and searched his name as a subject. We came up with a small list, but the books were quite old. He had a list of other possibilities and was going to look for those names instead.

How can I find historical stock quotes for the Coca-Cola Company?

Answer given to question: Yahoo Finance is the easiest resource I've found for historical stock prices.
Go to the company's page either by typing in the company name or Ticker symbol. Then on the left hand side, find the link for historical prices and put in the date you are looking for.

I am looking for an article for an assignment where I need to write an abstract, must be from the past ten years.

Answer given to question: Same assignment as before. In this case the student was looking for something on sports management and had had trouble finding anything in Academic Search Complete. Since he was familiar was Academic Search Complete, we looked in Business Source Complete and found several relevant and substantial articles (he commented he had not found articles that were long enough). I reminded him to use the the scholarly (peer-reviewed0 journal limiters and the date limiters.

I have an assignment for FYE ? . I missed the library session and need to find a journal article and then write an abstract for it.

Answer given to question: Traci, I did not find a LibGuide for his class (sorry can't remember the prof's name). The assignment said to choose a journal in their field of study - - the student was general studies so I showed him how to find peer-reviewed articles in Academic Search Complete, he seemed interested in Business so I also suggested Business Source Complete.

Showed him the all-important peer-reviewed journals only limiter and how to access full-text of the article.

I need to find an article on OhioLINK.

Answer given to question: First I asked if it was OhioLINK specifically, or if it was any database, and if there was a specific topic. It turned out that she had used OhioLINK last year, but didn't remember how, but any database would work. She also had the topic of how exercise affects pregnancy. I first showed her how to use OhioLINK, but then I showed her the database listings and we talked about the different subject areas. We also spent some time on MEDline, and we went over the different ways to limit searches such as full text, peer reviewed, academic journals, date, etc. We also talked about the advantage of using LC subject headings. Finally, we talked about what to do if she finds and article she likes but the full text isn't available. I showed her the ILL form and stressed the importance of beginning her research early in case she finds a key article that needs to be either purchased or found through ILL.

Do you guys have textbooks?

Date: 9/8/10 Time: 7:57

Question: Do you guys have textbooks?

Answer given to question: As a general rule, no. Sometimes professors will request books and then use them as textbooks, or they will put their personal copies on reserve. She didn't know the title, and said it was a statistics book. I told her that the title was essential, as we have many statistics books. Suddenly she remembered the title. Unfortunately, it was checked out, and the ores copy had been pulled. She asked for advice, as she had homework and her copy hadn't arrived in the mail yet. I said she should email her professor, try and find another student who has the book and borrow it, or go to the bookstore first thing in the morning and buy the book (and return her other book when it arrives to wherever she ordered it.)
